Invest In Yourself and In Your Business: The $400 Bet That Paid Off with Lisa Cruz

Invest in your business without letting fear win. See how a $400 decision and a mindset shift took one auto shop from chaos to two locations.

Invest In Your Business Before Fear Talks You Out of It

Most entrepreneurs don’t struggle with knowing what to do next in their business. They struggle with spending the money to do it. That fear and how to move past it is the center of a conversation between business coach Daniel Gomez and auto shop co-owner Lisa Cruz.

Lisa spent 25 years as a registered nurse before leaving to help run her husband Ricky’s auto repair business. At the time, the shop had no computer system, no tracked expenses, and hadn’t filed business taxes in years. She stepped in and rebuilt it from the ground up.

Why “It’s Just a Cost” Is the Wrong Question

One of the earliest fights Lisa and Ricky had wasn’t about the business itself; it was about clipboards. Ricky didn’t want to spend the money. Lisa bought them anyway, out of her own pocket. That same pattern repeated with a $400 Chamber of Commerce membership, which Ricky resisted and which ended up generating years of return.

The lesson wasn’t about clipboards or memberships specifically. It was about a mindset: every expense a business owner avoids out of fear is a decision to stay exactly where they are.

From a $1,000 Risk to a $5,000 Return

Later in the business’s growth, Lisa describes putting $1,000 into a new marketing effort and getting a $5,000 job in return. That kind of return only happens when money is allowed to move. As she puts it, keeping cash “under the mattress,” literally in her husband’s case, doesn’t grow a business. It just sits there.

Letting Go to Move Forward

The conversation also turns personal. Lisa talks about forgiving her son’s father, who left before her son was even born, and releasing resentment toward her own parents for things she carried well into adulthood. Her point is direct: much of what keeps people stuck in business is the same thing keeping them stuck in life: unresolved anger they haven’t set down yet.

The Bigger Takeaway

Lisa and Ricky’s business now includes a second location that sees roughly 30,000 cars pass by daily, bought from a shop everyone else assumed was dying. They saw an opportunity because they were willing to invest in it.

For entrepreneurs stuck between growth and fear, this episode is a reminder that the investment rarely feels safe in the moment; it only looks obvious in hindsight.
